Hepatitis C Initiative
Empowering underserved communities across Ontario with accessible screening, treatment, and education for a Hep C-free future.
What We Do
From awareness to cure, we address the full spectrum of HCV prevention and treatment.
We bridge the gap between screening and treatment for Hepatitis C, focusing on marginalized populations including Indigenous peoples, rural communities, people who use drugs, and 2SLGBTQ+ individuals across Ontario.
Point-of-care rapid testing, pharmacist-led treatment pathways, culturally sensitive education, harm reduction supplies, and care coordination to maximize accessibility for all communities.
We welcome collaboration from healthcare clinics, pharmacies, researchers, Indigenous health centers, and community organizations. Together, we can eliminate Hepatitis C in Ontario.
Understanding Hep C
A viral infection attacking the liver, ranging from mild illness to serious, lifelong disease leading to cirrhosis and cancer if untreated.
More than 250,000 Canadians live with Hep C—nearly half don't know it. The virus can remain symptomless for decades.
Rapid point-of-care tests detect Hep C antibodies in under 20 minutes with just a finger prick.
Modern DAA treatments cure over 95% of cases. Simple pills for 8–12 weeks—no injections, minimal side effects.
Disproportionately affects people who inject drugs, Indigenous communities, incarcerated individuals, and baby boomers.
Spreads through blood contact: sharing needles, unsterile tattoos/piercings, needlestick injuries, rarely sexual contact.
The Process
Quick, confidential finger-prick antibody test. Results in 20 minutes.
If positive, a blood draw confirms active infection and assesses liver health.
Pharmacist-led model prescribes and dispenses treatment directly.
Complete 8–12 week course, confirm cure with follow-up test.
